New Error appears after update to latest version

Hi Dave,
In 5.3.2 we added an additional checks on disk free space values, because we have seen cases where disks report invalid information. For example, we have seem some disks report free space larger than the total capacity of the disk. When SecuritySpy encounters this, it now stop deleting files for safety reasons, to avoid deleting more files than it should.
To find out what values the disk is reporting, please email us and include SecuritySpy's debug file (SecuritySpy menu > Debug > Create Debug File On Desktop) and we will be able to advise you further. -
I wanted to share that I got this error also. I'm planning to use a 265GB flash card inserted in the back of my iMac for camera storage. The SecuritySpy debug file was reporting:
255.837 GB total; 255.983 GB free; 255.983 GB available; hfs (ERROR 16881 OBTAINING DISK INFO)
...and as Ben points out, this is a case of "available" being larger than "total", in this case by .145GB.
I copied some files onto the volume. This reduced the available space, obviously, and now SecuritySpy is allowing me to make it the default location. Hope it keeps working! I set "Delete old files by available space" to .3GB for a little bit of margin. -
I am also getting the 16881 error:
"28/09/2021 19:49:19: Error deleting old files from volume "ST7a SS 1T" 5.3.4,24770,16881 Bad disk capacity, please replace/reformat this disk.
There is nothing wrong with my new Samsung 7 SSD. I have tried another Samsung 7 SSD and the error shows with that perfectly working drive also.
In addition to this error, for many months now SS has been randomly deleting all of my saved files, without reaching the storage reserve and the days limit.
I have needed to turn off the the storage reserve and lower my days limit to get SS to stop the 16881 error.
Looks like this problem has been going on a long time. Hope you can fix this soon.
Thanks, Tom -
Hi @TomQ so that we can investigate this issue, please email us and include a debug file that you create by clicking on the SecuritySpy menu, going to the Debug submenu, and selecting the option "Create Debug File On Desktop".
SecuritySpy never randomly deletes files - it only deletes files based on the strict criteria under the Preferences > Storage settings panel. If the disk is reporting that it has very little free space, SecuritySpy will start deleting files until the disk reports that it has enough free space. What we have seen sometimes is that the disk can report an unusually low amount of free space under certain circumstances - sometimes we have traced this back to Time Machine (which can fill up the disk with temporary snapshots), and other times due to other applications or processes using up free space on the disk.
In terms of the "bad disk capacity" message, this will be generated when the disk reports that it has more free space than its maximum capacity. This situation should obviously be impossible, but we have seen it a few times and it's not clear how we should deal with this situation. This check is in place to prevent files from being deleted erroneously due to bad disk information being reported by the drive.
Is the disk you are referring to the system drive? Most of the problems you are describing have occurred in our experience when the system drive is also being used for SecuritySpy. The best advice here is to obtain an external drive connected by USB or Thunderbolt, that you can dedicate to SecuritySpy only. -
When I had this problem Ben sent me a link to an update which fixed it for me but that was some time ago now - are you using the latest version? I log video to an external drive
