Mac Mini Set Up

I am planning a two camera set up using a Mac mini with external hard drive to record the video.

It's the base 2014 i5 1.4ghz with 4gb ram mini and I was hoping to use a USB 2.0 external hard drive for the video.Recording will be on detection.

I don't have the cameras yet but considering some Hikvision (3mp or 4mp) which will be powered using Poe.Everything on the network is connected via Ethernet.

Does this set up sound workable to the more experienced users here.

    This setup sounds great. Wiring everything, rather than relying on WiFi, is a good idea, and using high-resolution cameras will provide you with a good solution for years to come. The Mac is powerful enough for this setup, and will also allow you to add a couple more cameras in the future if you want to do so.

    Just make sure you use a high-quality PoE switch from a well-known manufacturer (e.g. Netgear). Also, while USB 2.0 should be fast enough, you may as well go for a USB 3.0 external drive. This provides much better performance for a minor increase in cost.

    I have a spare usb 2.0 h/drive that's not being used hence my thinking to use for the recordings.

    I meant to ask regarding the licence as I only plan on two cameras can I purchase the single licence twice or will I need the four camera licence.

    A USB 2.0 drive should be fast enough, so go ahead and try that first. You probably won't have any issues.

    Each SecuritySpy license is for one Mac only, so you will need a 4-camera license.
