Causes of high CPU

I am slowly updating my cameras from 720p daylight only to 1080p night vision. One thing has always seemed peculiar to me and it's why the CPU time expended by SS on a 720p seems to increase a lot when the camera is running at low light levels. Could it be the low res pixelation caused by the camera trying to compensate for low light. I have motion detection enabled for all camera's so maybe the algorithm to detect motion is finding it more difficult when the lower res daytime camera is struggling in low light conditions ?

  • I can't imagine why this would be the case, unless the camera is increasing its frame rate at night for some reason (which it shouldn't). When looking at CPU figures in Activity Monitor or in SecuritySpy, make sure you're comparing like-for-like, for example when there are no video captures happening, and when all the resolutions and frame rates are the same.

    The algorithm to detect motion will use the same amount of CPU no matter what the incoming stream looks like.
  • Well the camera is an Axis M1004-W and it has way more config pages then it needs for its own good. I have found the page which claims to let you define the data rate but it does not seem to have any effect - even after a reboot. Still it's the last of the 4 units I have of this kind, I'm replacing them with ucam247 1080p's which are cheaper and have night vision. I had to switch when Y-Cam decided to shoot themselves in the foot and locked down their camera's to their cloud solution.
