IP Cam (DS-2DE3304W-DE) works fine via web browser both LAN and WAN. Also works on iPhone with LiveCams Pro.

SecuritySpy logs into the camera but will not display an image. Tried RTSP-over-HTTP and RTSP TCP.

Log file entry: 2016/08/07 23:16:01: Error communicating with the network device "Driveway". 4.0.4,70184,1245 Failed to obtain video frame from network device.

Any advice?

  • This error means that SecuritySpy was unable to determine some key parameters about the video stream, such as the width and height of the video. Could you check the encoding parameters in the camera's settings pages for an option to set the camera to "H.264 Baseline" (or "H.264B") encoding?

    Does this resolve the issue? If not we will investigate further.
  • Also, check the camera is set to H.264 mode and not H.265 mode.
  • Within the Video/Audio > Video menu...
    The only video encoding option is H.264 and it's selected.

    Video settings:
    Stream Type = Main Stream(Normal)
    Video Type = Video Stream
    Resolution = 2048*1536
    Bitrate Type = Variable
    Video Quality = Medium
    Frame Rate = 10 fps
    Max. Bitrate = 6144 Kbps
    Video Encoding = H.264
    H.264+ = OFF
    Profile = High Profile
    I Frame Interval = 50
    Smoothing = 50
  • It's the "Profile" setting that has the options I was referring to - here you should see an option for "Baseline". Could you please set this and let me know if this resolves the issue?
  • Changing the Profile to Basic Profile seems to have done it. FYI, the Main Profile doesn't work either.

    Thanks!
  • A related followup question. The SecuritySpy displayed HikVision image has quite a flicker. I don't see that in a web browser. I increased the Frame Rate to 12fps and then 20fps, but it didn't help. I've also tried changing the Bitrate Type to Variable. Changing from a Resolution of 2048*1536 to 1920*1080P didn't help either.

    Something else I can try?
  • I'm not quite sure what you mean by flicker - are you seeing green or black video frames? Or some problem with moving objects in the video feed? Do you see this in recorded footage or only live video?

    How is your Mac connected to the camera: are either on WiFi? If so then this could be the problem. It's best to connect both by wired ethernet if possible. Or, try reducing the frame rate (keep the resolution at maximum for the best quality images).
  • I manage SecuritySpy, running on a mini, remotely by LAN. I just checked the mini display and found no flicker. With two camera's in the SS window, only the HikVision has the problem when viewed remotely.

    The image is fairly high in contrast. The darker areas (vegetation) go slightly dimmer and then brighter. This occurs even when there is no movement.

    As I change the frame rate, the flicker or flashing changes in frequency to match. Viewing in a web browser has no flicker.

    Everything is connected via ethernet.
  • I suspect this is something to do with the scaling that is performed when you view the camera remotely (which depends on the resolution, which would explain why you see it in one camera but not the other). This is probably benign and won't affect the captured footage.

    If you still think this is a problem that needs investigating, please email us a short clip captured by SecuritySpy to demonstrate the problem, and we will look into it.
