Foscam Audio
Unable to receive audio from Foscam Fl9820W. I understand that my Macintosh, using Safari, is unable to view or hear the data from a Foscam camera. Seems that Foscam's only work with Microsoft's Activex. But I can receive video and audio using my iPhone's Foscam application. So I thought that Security Spy had the secret sauce that would enable me to see AND hear my IP camera. But that's not so. I am able to access all my camera's audio and video settings using Apple's Safari, (just can't see or hear anything) so Ben is there some thing I am missing. Because I haven't figured it out. What is a G726/G711 audio? Which should I select? How should Security Spy be set up? Please help

Hi JimBob,
Yes, we support this camera for both video and audio.
To set the camera up in SecuritySpy:
- In the Video Device Settings window, create a new network device
- Select "Foscam JPEG" as the device type
- Enter the camera's IP address
- Enter the camera's username and password
- Click OK
You should see video from the camera in the main "All cameras" window in SecuritySpy. And if you open the Camera Status window, you should see a small speaker icon next to the camera's listing - this indicates the presence of audio. Click it to play the live audio through your Mac's speakers.
G.726 and G.711 are related but different audio encoding formats. SecuritySpy supports both, but I would recommend using G.711 as this is simpler and can be recorded directly to captured movie files (whereas G.726 has to be transcoded to G.711 before saving to the file, because it has no playback support in QuickTime). -
Ok, so in SecuritySpy I changed the "Video Device Settings" from "H.264 RTSP-over-HTTP (video and audio) to "JPEG HTTP (video only), input 1, HTTP Port = 80 , RTSP Port = 554, (per Foscam's settings) Device Type: Foscam Fl9820W. In the Camera Settings window I have selected Audio input: Built-in-Input, Devise settings= line in. Ok now I have a speaker symbol in the Camera Status window but I do not record any audio ( I have selected "Record Audio both for motion movies and continuous.) In the Foscam setting I have selected audio type and "G711" and rebooted the device. Ok, I have the speaker symbol in the Camera Status window, I set the Audio Detection level at 35% and did some loud clapping for several seconds along with some music but still no captured audio. I did capture some video but there was no music there. Now What?

Hi JimBob,
I actually gave you the wrong advice in my last message, so apologies for that! You'll need to select the "Foscam H.264" profile, NOT the "Foscam JPEG" profile, as I incorrectly stated above.
And you'll need to select "H.264 RTSP" as the Format in the Video Device Settings Window.
Then, in the Audio section of the Camera Settings window, select "Network device" as the audio input, not "Built-in Input" (which refers to the Mac's built-in input and not the camera's).
Does this do it? -
I changed the Video Device Setting to "H.264 RTSP-over-HTTP (video and audio)", input number 1. HTTP Port = 80 , RTSP Port = 554, (per Foscam's settings) Device Type: Foscam Fl9820W. I checked : No recompression of data from this device. In the Camera Settings window I have selected Audio input: Network devise and selected both the record audio options. Audio Detection trigger level is 35%. trigger time = 1 sec. In the Foscam Audio setup I have selected first stream and second stream Audio capture; = ON, Audio type is G711, Audio input is "Mic".
HTTP Port number: (80 or 1024~49151)
RTSP Port number: (554 or 1024~49151)
Should I do a port scan and see if something else is using my port? Or I could just make a change and see what happens.
RTSP Permission checksum: is On. I don't know what effect this will have on things? Any comment? -
Hi JimBob,
Those sound like the correct settings - are you getting audio coming through now?
If you are seeing the live video in SecuritySpy, then the streaming is working and there is no point checking things like port numbers or permissions. The audio stream should come over with the video stream, so if one is working the other should too. -
When I select Format: H.264 RTSP (video and audio) I get a Communication error and cannot connect with the camera. when I use H.264 RTSP-over-HTTP (video and audio) I get no microphone in the Camera Status window but I changed the Audio Input from network to "built in" I get the speaker symbol in the Camera Status window? Does this mean anything too you? The camera is in active mode. If this was working would I expect to hear audio at all times or just after an event in the recorded video?

Hi JimBob
The "Built-in" audio input option refers to the Mac's built-in input, not the cameras. So while you are getting the speaker icon when this is selected, indicating a valid audio input, this is coming from the Mac's audio input which is most likely silent. The correct audio input to select is "Network audio".
Do you see the "Network audio" option for the audio input, when you have selected the H.264 RTSP-over-HTTP Format option? This should be available for this format.
If you are still having problems, I think the best way forward would be for you to put your camera online temporarily so that we can connect to it from here and do some testing - would this be possible? To do this you will have to set up the port forwarding settings on your router to forward incoming connections to the camera on port 80, and email us your public IP address (or DDNS name, which can be set up in SecuritySpy's Web Server Setup window). Let me know if you need more information about how to set this up.
