I tried to view the user manual online but the links to the online manual seem broken. I just get a page listing my 'top sites'. So I'll put this question. Sometimes the cameras are so confused by rain or shifting light that motion recording isn't any use and in that case the cameras might simply be monitored. But in that case when suddenly it's necessary to record footage it would be ideal to have a key combination that overides everything and allows immediate recording without having to dig into user preferences by which time the incident would almost certainly have passed.

I think the function you're looking for is "Set all cameras to Active mode" in the Control menu, or Command-R.
As for rain/light setting off the motion detection, this does happen sometimes (though it can be mitigated in various ways such as by extending the "trigger time" setting in the Camera Settings window). However I would recommend simply leaving the cameras on their normal schedules all the time. Getting a few false-positive detections from time to time is better than forgetting to set the camera back to Active mode (or re-enabling motion detection), thereby missing some important events. -
Thank you but command R simply sets cameras to active mode but does not initiate any recording unless the cameras detect motion. What I'm looking for is a simple record now function that doesn't depend on any preference presets. A motion detection preset would be my standard preset but I have to turn it off for long periods because of incessant rain or vehicle headlights partially illuminating a scene causing gigabytes of false positives.

Sorry, there is nothing quite like you describe. It is possible to set up using AppleScripts, but nothing like this is actually built into the software.
I'm surprised you're getting such problems with rain. This can be somewhat of a problem if your camera has built-in infra-red LEDs - at night this can brighly illuminate objects such as insects and rain right in front of the camera, triggering motion detection. One good solution for this is to turn of the camera's built-in LEDs, and instead use separate visible or IR lighting. -
Thanks but hat was my point, I know there isn't such an option, I should have been more clear, it was something I was suggesting would be useful. As for the infrared I never use them, there is so much ambient light here they aren't worth the hassle and the hassle is that no matter what I do my cameras fog a little inside and the infrared produces a terribly cloudy picture. As for the rain, where I live we have a saying. 'If you can't see the mountains it's raining, if you can see the mountains it's going to rain'.
As for motion detection, I didn't realize at first but these cameras all seem to be using changes in pixel illumination and not actual motion such as would be used in a PIR. So rain and shifting lights are a curse.
I wouldn't have a clue how to use an applescript I'm afraid, if it isn't in the software's GUI I don't have a clue. -
