SS Webserver Page Unavailable from Some WiFi Networks?
Hi, all, with yet another puzzling question for the wizards who frequent here. I set up SS for a friend and we reach the SS web server via a dynDNS name and port number, such as sample.dyndvr.org:50000 .
The web page loads for me fine all the time. But my friend travels a lot and he complains that while staying in certain hotels he is connected to the internet by hotel WiFi and he cannot reach the SS web server.
During one of these hotel stays when he couldn't log in, he tethered his MacBook Air to his iPhone briefly for a data connection and the page loaded.
Do public/semi public hotspots like hotel networks block certain ports? Would there be a more preferred port number to set up or can you suggest a more reliable way to connect back to the SS web server from hotel WiFi networks?

It sounds like the port is being blocked, as you have suggested. I think this is quite common for public WiFi spots, where they are attempting to limit bandwidth consumption by providing access to just a limited set of services (web, email etc.)
The best thing to do is to use port 80 for the external (Internet) port in the router's port forwarding rule. This is the standard HTTP port, so is highly unlikely to be blocked by any internet connection.
SecuritySpy's own port remains at what you have already set up (the default being 8000). So, the port forwarding rule should specify 80 as the external port and 8000 as the internal port, so that an incoming connection on port 80 is forwarded to SecuritySpy on port 8000. Then you simply use the address sample.dyndvr.org in order to connect - you don't need to explicitly specify a port number in the address if it's 80.
