Screen Saver: streams locking

I've moved from my old method of fullscreen VNC to what I had hoped would be a better method of multi-camera remote views: the screen saver module. However, I've noticed that it really doesn't work particularly well - the streams lock up (frozen image) fairly predictably from intervals ranging from 2 minutes for the first one to after about 30 minutes 12 or so of the selected 16 cameras are stuck. Any suggestions here from anyone? The network is rock-solid (gig-e) between the two machines.

  • Hi JT, we'll have a look at this, though we haven't come across this before. When this happens, do the streams come back by themselves or do you have to stop and restart the screensaver? When this happens, if you view the streams on a different device (e.g. an iPhone), are they up and running in SecuritySpy?
  • I have to start and stop the screensaver and the stream activity unlocks upon restart. The streams on other viewing platforms (looking at the console machine, or via IP Cam Viewer, for instance) work fine, as does recording of the streams. There does seem to be a tendency for the higher-bandwidth streams to lock up first, but I'm not 100% sure if that's just me noticing them first or if it's actually related.
  • Worth clarifying: the streams are working via other viewers while there are locking problems on the ones being displayed through the screen saver module.
  • Just wondered if there'd be any progress on this as I have the same issue. Security Spy set up and running on a Mac Pro and the screensaver running on a Mac Mini on the same network. The feeds are fine viewing on my iPhone or remotely on another laptop but the screensaver freezes and has to be stopped and restarted to get a fresh start.
  • Sorry, we haven't had a chance to look at this yet, but will investigate this soon and will post back here, hopefully with a fix.
  • Add me to the list. Not only is this locking up but it seems that when I try and remote in to a mac running the screen saver the machine locks up. I have to call the clients and have them hard reset the machine. Doesn't happen every time but enough that I am going to take off the screen saver now.
  • Hi guys, can you confirm if you can or can't observe the SecuritySpy (web) server, serving the screensaver, in a web-browser. With and without the screensaver active please?
    Thanks
  • Yes, web server is still running. Remote patrol can show image but machine is locked up. Screen saver shows frozen images.

Have/can you try a SMC reset to set your Mac's sleep behaviour back to defaults? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Please also make sure the Mac OS is completely up to date and all firmware (i.e. hardware/sleep) updates are applied.

As this sounds like a Mac/sleep issue impacting on the screensaver and/or remote access thereof.

Please also confirm if the Mac itself is locked up locally (as Remote Patrol working indicates this is not the case). Not just if/when contacted remotely. As the latter indicates VNC, ARD etc, could be the cause.
  • I have different behaviors. For me, it's 100% not related to screen or machine sleep. The monitor that exhibits the behaviors never sleeps, and the machine never sleeps either. The problems have been exhibited on two different Macs (a Mini, and before that, my laptop) running 10.7 with all firmware updates. For me, the Mac is perfectly responsive otherwise - individual cameras freeze one at a time until the majority of them are locked up. The SS webserver is still responsive during outage intervals.
