Feature Request, Adaptive Recording...

Hi All,

I've been using SS for years now, and added more and better camera's. Which in turn require more storage.
I stumbled across an in my opinion great feature of a DVR company. Adaptive Recording as in, Nothing going on, 720p and when something is going on switch on the fly to 1080p recording.

And to be honest, i tried it and it really works well.

Regards,

Raymond

  • Hi - sorry for the lack of comment, I don't know how we missed your post!

This is a good idea in principal, however what the recorder would have to do is receive 1080p video from the camera, and down-size this to 720p before compressing and recording to disk. This will save some disk space, but will use a lot of CPU time. Generally, with disk space getting increasingly cheaper, it's much more important to preserve CPU time rather than disk space, hence I think this feature would have limited benefit.

What you could do, if the camera supports multiple streams with different parameters, is set up two instances of the camera in SecuritySpy: a low-resolution one for continuous recording and a high-resolution one for motion recording. This offloads all the processing onto the camera while also giving you the disk space savings.
