Best way to go about a new setup....

Hi guys

Got to spec a new install, which will comprise 13 cameras, all doing their own encoding to h.264 at 1280x720.

The cameras will need to record at reasonable framerates - 5 at 25fps and the remainder as good as we can get.

Also, these 5 cameras will have incoming audio via a USB interface at the mac.

what sort of spec should I be looking at for the mac? Would love to be able to get away with quad core - I am trying to assume a bit of diversity here given that most if not all cameras will be set to motion detection.

    Hi Rich,

    You should be able to make this work on a previous-generation 2.6GHz quad-core i7 Mac mini (the new dual-core ones aren't powerful enough unfortunately).

    25fps is a very high frame rate for video surveillance, but if you just need this for 5 of the cameras this is fine, it just means that the others will run at a lower frame rate than otherwise possible - perhaps around 8fps. Is this good enough? If not, you might want to look at relaxing your 25fps requirement a bit.

    Do you know what cameras you are going to use?

    Hi, yes its actually for training purposes in a veterinary setting, hence the need for clear video and audio in certain rooms. The other cameras are serving a more surveillance oriented role. Thanks for the info

    Just to add, the cameras will likely be TrendNet TV-IP321PI (I think these are supported?)

    Also, while you're here...

    I've got an M-Audio M Track Quad USB audio interface which I can't seem to get to work with the software. I can see it in the audio options, and I can select the channel I want for each camera and it's sampling rate, but when I click Ok there is no audio showing up in the camera status window. Any ideas? I have used a Behringer FCA1616 previously which is great if you can put up with it failing every 2-3 months!

    Hi Rich,

    The TRENDnet TV-IP321PI cameras currently are not yet on our list of compatible cameras. It's likely that they will work, however we have had some reports of problems with the H.264 stream for one or two of the TRENDnet models (QuickTime, which SecuritySpy uses to decode the incoming video, seems to be be somewhat incompatible with the video produced by the camera, causing intermittent crashes).

    Therefore, to be safe, I would advise you in this instance to stick to cameras on our list. For example, the Dahua Technology IPC-HDW1000S.

    Your M-Audio device should work. To help us debug this, please can you locate your Log file, which will be in the SecuritySpy folder within your Documents folder, and email it to us.
