Is there a guide to choosing the type/speed processor and amount of RAM for a certain number of streams/cameras? I'm looking into the possibility of taking the streams from 48 cameras into three Axis P7216 encoders and recording on an unlimited license of SecuritySpy.

    Thanks for the quick response. Here is what I came up with:

    Number of cameras: 48
    Video resolution of each camera: 0.3 MP
    Camera type: Compressed IP
    Compression format for capture: H.264
    Frame rate (fps) for each camera: 3fps

    Result: Mac with 2.3 GHz processor. Approximately 216 GB free disk space recommended.

    The tool states that motion capture is assumed. I can calculate the disk space required for 30 days of continuous recording but how will that affect the CPU requirements? Or maybe a better question is would a 3.2GHz quad-core i5 iMac be sufficient for continuous recording? I would probably configure it with 32GB of RAM.

    A 3.2 GHz quad-core iMac will be more than sufficient, as you are using a low frame rate, and due to the low resolution of analog cameras. If SecuritySpy is capturing the H.264 data directly from the Axis device to disk (which is the best option), then continuous capture doesn't use any more CPU resources than motion detection capture. Likewise, 8-16 GB RAM will be plenty.

    Well, I got approval and purchased the Axis P7216's and the iMac and have it all set up with an unlimited license and everything seems to be working perfectly. Already had an incident last night and finding and copying the footage from the four cameras covering the area was an absolute pleasure compared to the Digital Micro Sprite multiple recorder setup we've had in the past. With all 48 cameras recording continuous at 3 fps the iMac is working but no where near overworked. Thank You.
