SSL error connecting view-only Mac to server

On a MacBook Pro used for viewing only, I am suddenly getting SSL errors when trying to connect to the server. All my iOS devices, connecting via the same server settings, continue to connect fine. Error is -9807.

Using Safari on the MacBook Pro I can easily log into the SecuritySpy server using both local and internet connections. But on the MacBook Pro both connection types return the SSL error using the same exact connection settings.

I've tried rebooting both Macs with no luck.

I believe both Macs auto-updated system software last night, maybe a factor?

Thanks, Bill

  • I have the same problem on a viewing MacBookPro. Monterey 12.6.1, MacBookPro, Security Spy 5.5.7. Security. SecuritySpy running on another M1MacMini. Can access fine from phone or iPad but not from computer. Not getting error codes just no connection.

Able to access another separately licensed M1MacMini without a problem.

    Thanks, Another Bill

  • Wasn't there something about SS needing to generate a new SSL certificate? I think it was a comment in regard to change of machine, but I wonder if a system update would change the environment enough that the certificate needs to be regenerated. IIRC, that was performed by turning the server in SS off, then back on.

  • This SSL error is usually due to attempting a secure connection with an invalid server certificate.

If the two Macs are on the same local network, the usual cause of this is if you are using the server's local address (either IP or Bonjour address) for the connection - this will invalidate the server certificate (which will only be valid for the Internet "viewcam.me" address). The solution is to turn on the option at Preferences > Cameras > Setup > Advanced Setup Options > Accept invalid SSL certificates, for each camera showing this error in SecuritySpy on the client (receiving) Mac.

  • I tried guykuo's suggestion of toggling server web access off and back on with no luck.

I can't try Ben's suggestion because when I try to add the cameras from the server via "Add All Cameras from SecuritySpy Server" I receive the SSL error. So there are no cameras to configure. I suppose I could add the network cameras individually via their IP addresses, but I thought the intention here with a view-only Mac is to draw live video from the server and not the cameras themselves. Perhaps that's not correct.

    Thanks, Bill

Hi @nagar please install the latest beta version of SecuritySpy (currently 5.5.8b14) on the client Mac (the one that will be receiving the streams). When adding all cameras from a SecuritySpy server, if the certificate is not valid, it will now ask you if you want to accept it anyway. So I hope this will provide the solution for you, please let me know.

  • Ben, if your tech support was any faster the physicists would have to take a harder look at the universe's speed limit (light) 😎.

The beta worked like a charm.

    Thanks.

  • Great to hear that, and I'm glad we could provide a speedy solution!
