Why are webcams different from ip cameras

If I add a webcam to SS, when I right click on the display window I don't get the same set of options that I do with an ip camera. Why is this ?

[Edit} Just realised that it's because I've exceeded my 4 camera license !

  • Good to hear you found the answer. The only difference you should see between webcams (e.g. USB, built-in) and IP cameras is the device settings panel (Preferences > Cameras > Device); beyond that, they are treated the same across the software, with the same features available.

  • Hi Ben-

I ran into this as well. When I moved to a new computer, the new FaceTime camera came up as a new device but was now at the bottom of the Camera Info list. After I removed the reference to the original FaceTime camera, the new one remained the 5th camera in the list and it was in View Only as the license I have on my desktop is only 4 cameras. Made sense when I finally figured it out but was initially confusing nonetheless.

As a suggestion, I feel this could be made a little clearer by having the Settings>Cameras>Cameras (list) show a symbol or other indication of which cameras are currently utilizing a license. (Maybe just an asterisk with wording in the right panel?) Because it's not also inherently obvious that the Cameras list can be reordered (there are no arrows at the bottom, it's just drag and drop) or what the significance of re-ordering them is related to licensing (not just display order).

And I'll admit this may be documented but I think for most folks a reference in the UI would be helpful.

  • When you move computers, the FaceTime camera is actually a different physical camera, so you'll have to delete the old camera instance (which will no longer work) and add and set up the new one again.

I understand your comments about the licensing and the list order. We'll see what we can do to make this clearer.
