Display / viewing options for a "always on" monitor in kitchen

Hi All,

I'd like to have a means to view my cameras on a small monitor in my kitchen, that is always on. The most obvious solution that comes to mind is an iPad Pro, which is a costly but workable solution.

What other recommendations do you have?

Thanks,

Justin

  • I'd go for an older iPad. Perhaps one you've "outgrown"? Or a used/refurbished one? I doubt you'd need the pro model just to view your cameras.

  • I agree that an older iPad would provide a good solution here for a reasonable cost - the minimum requirement for the SecuritySpy iOS app is iOS 13, so for example a 5th generation iPad or a 3rd generation iPad Air (or newer) would do the job.

  • ... or point that iPad at the SSpy webserver.

In our case we run an old MacMini server (2012) in a closet, tied into an old Samsung TV slapped on the wall.

Great for looking up recipes and playing iTunes while cooking :)

  • I was thinking I'd use the web server. Although I bunch of cameras, I only want/need to see 2 on a screen at once. I'd like an iPad but I'm wondering if a Rpi Zero with a larger screen/case would work?

  • We've never actually tested SecuritySpy's web interface with a web browser on a Raspberry Pi Zero so perhaps this should be avoided. I think the only way this would work well with a Raspberry Pi would be if you can find a Pi app that can accept RTSP or MJPEG streams, and can display these in a nice interface - then you can give the app URLs created from the "URL Generator" window in SecuritySpy in order to access the video streams.

  • Why not just get an older Apple TV and a super-cheap LCD television? Then use AirPlay to display from your primary Mac to the Apple TV. It would require that you leave your SS Mac set up in "full screen" mode all the time but that hopefully isn't an issue. I find older TVs at garage sales for $20 and an Apple TV that will work goes for $10 on eBay.
