Viewing network saturation

Ben, I noted that when I view the cameras using SecuritySpy (as view only) from the SecuritySpy server (M1 Mac Mini 16GB/2TB) that in Activity Monitor on the server, or here, I see that the network is saturated. The data per second is about 90 to 90 MB/Sec, which if I am calculating correctly, that is near the full 1GB of the network. I wondered if there is a way to lower this rate.

I am viewing 12 cameras. I tried all 12 with just using the web interface, and the rate per second was certainly lower compared to using SecuritySpy as a viewer, and I can select the sizes. I just wondered if there as a way to really lower this rate, or if it's a non issue, but I do keep a view window open all the time on another computer.

    What I ended up doing, was on computer #2 (the view only), I manually entered cameras to view and this really helped with the bandwidth. I know the trial will expire in 30 days. Am I able to keep viewing like this after 30 days? If not, is there a view only license since I'm using a server to record.

    I keep answering my own questions. I see that to view only from a second computer, I need a one camera license, OR, purchase the ViewCam software. Thanks for making it where we can still view additional cameras economically.

    I'll answer my own post in hopes it might help others. View the server running SecuritySpy was causing very heavy network usage. I was using JPEG to transmit and changed it to h.264 and network usage plummeted to about 10% of what was being used.

    Yes, JPEG is much higher bandwidth, so using H.264 is definitely preferred here.

    If you are pulling the feeds from a licensed SecuritySpy server, you can use a second unregistered copy of SecuritySpy for free for this purpose. Alternatively (as you correctly state) you can use ViewCam to pull the feeds directly from the cameras themselves - this has the advantage of avoiding additional processing load on the server to produce the streams for viewing. Or, you can use SecuritySpy with a 1-camera license to do this too: the first camera will operate fully, and you can add any number of additional cameras, which will operate in view-only mode.
