Storage usage difference between cameras

Hello

I have four 4meg cameras, all seem to have the same video settings in the cameras.
Why could the storage usage vary by camera, all are just continuous recording.

IE
Side, 22 Files usage 27.85GB
Garden, 22 Files usage 28.33GB
Kitchen, 22 Files 20.1GB
Drive 23 Files 17.46GB

The above represents one days capture at 10FPS, ideally I was trying to adjust them to match the lowest storage usage.
Could this simply be due to the camera model they are all Hikvision of various types.

Cheers Phil

  • If you are recording with VBR (variable bit rate) your storage will vary by complexity of recording, right?
  • Yes @jimmyjohnson is correct - if the cameras are set to VBR encoding (which I would recommend), then the data rate is dependent not only on the resolution, frame rate and quality seeing, but the complexity of the camera's view, and the amount of movement and noise too. So for example if one camera is in a location with better lighting at night, the noise in the image will be much less and therefore its data rate will be lower, all other things being equal.
  • Cheers Thanks, I'll leave the settings as this explains it......
  • I have a question that is related to this topic. Forgive me if this question has been answer but there is a lot of post and I don't see anyway in the SecuritySpy forum that to have the subject(s) categorize into folders. Is there a way to have the old files auto-delete by age per camera instead of having a overall general setting if not I would like it to be added as a feature request. I have some cameras because of the area the cameras are located and number of motion triggers it would be great to have those cameras delete files every 4 - 6 days vs others that I keep for 60 days, it would save on my storage situation, if not can I create a script to run this task in the camera section of the program somehow?

Hi @samsungpower, this has been quite a popular feature request, so we have decided to implement it. This feature is now in the latest beta version of SecuritySpy (currently 5.3.5b1). You will find a new option under Preferences > Cameras > Setup to set the automatic file deletion age for each camera. If you don't specify this, the default settings, as set under Preferences > Storage, will be used.

Let me know if this all makes sense, and please confirm this works as expected after you've had a chance to test.
  • Thanks, I downloaded the beta version and under the storage default setting it is set at 60 days and in two of my camera(s), side door and landing I have them set for 30 days. In both situation they started to delete the files but the folders still contains files from 2021-07-12 to 2021-08-17 in each of them and yes I confirm the computer date and time is set correctly. Maybe this is normal behaviour and eventually some time it will delete the rest of them. Everything else seem to be working correctly with the beta version so far, no other problems.
  • If there is a lot of history beyond the 30 days, it may take a little while to delete it all. SecuritySpy purposefully throttles file deletion so as to avoid negative impacts on disk performance. If the files have not been removed after a few more hours, please let me know and I will investigate.
  • Files are still not delete the next day. The folders still contains files from 2021-07-12 and I have also done some test on some of my other cameras and they are not deleting the proper range also. I did try changing the storage default setting from 60 to 59 days and within 30 sec all files were deleted.
  • OK, this definitely sounds like the new option isn't working properly for some reason. I have just sent you an email with some instructions to run a special debug version of SecuritySpy so that I can investigate what is happening. Thanks.
