Does SS have any issues recording if Internet Access is down?
We recently put three outdoor cameras, all hard wired into a LAN at a rental house we bought. The internet access in this area was down last night for a considerable amount of time. After it came back up and I accessed the SS web server I noticed that there were no recordings made during the time the internet was down. Is there some impact to SS if it has no internet access that would cause it not to record ? I would have thought that all it required to capture recordings was the local network to be running.

Hi doodah - SecuritySpy definitely does not need internet access in order to record. If the cameras and computer are on the same LAN then the internet access should not affect recording. Could there have been a power cut that not only took out the internet, but cut powers to the cameras/computer too?

Ben, I'm still investigating what happened. There was no power loss.... the ISP for this area had some serious issues and was down for several hours. Events took place that should have resulted in a recording.... I didn't think that internet access would affect it, but it made sense to ask... its very strange. All has been fine since that one day, but internet has been up since. I checked the system log and the computer was running fine the whole time.

Very strange. Maybe the cameras themselves stopped working due to lack of internet? Though this is not something I've heard of before. It's best when you're next onsite to simulate the problem by disconnecting the modem from the incoming cable/phone line and see what stops working. Let us know what you find out!

Perchance is your router an old Linksys unit? Some of the Linksys routers will disrupt LAN service when the WAN connection goes down. Never would have suspected the LAN to go down, but every time our WAN went down for an extended time, all our network shares would go off line. After replacing the Linksys router with an Airport Extreme, our LAN is no longer affected by a WAN outage.

have not been able to reproduce the problem.. But the router we use is an Airport Extreme... 1st generation with updated firmware.
