Internet Viewing Connection

I installed a Security Spy system (4 cameras) on my iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.5. The system runs fine on my iMac, but I can not connect to it via the internet to view the system on my MacBook Air when I am traveling. I have followed all the instruction in the user manual to connect via the web, but obviously I am missing something as nothing works. Any suggestions?

    Hi, I presume you have followed these instructions for setting up remote viewing?

    Without a bit more information it's difficult to diagnose what could be wrong but here are some things to check:

    - Make sure you have set up a DDNS name in SecuritySpy's Web Server Settings window and the indicator light next to that is green indicating success. For example if your DDNS name is "example" then you would connect to SecuritySpy over the internet using the address http://example.viewcam.me:8000/

    - Note that this address won't necessarily work from within your network. If you have an iPhone, you can test this by turning off WiFi and trying to connect over 3G).

    - Check that your iMac has a static IP address on your local network.

    - Check that your router is configured to forward incoming requests on port 8000 to your iMac's IP address on port 8000.

    - If you have an Airport device between your router and your iMac, make sure this is in bridge mode. (But before switching it to bridge mode make sure your router is actually a router and not just a modem. A modem will have a single output ethernet port, and it should say "modem" on it, whereas routers will generally have multiple ethernet ports and often WiFi features).

    If you are still having problems, please email us screenshots of all relevant settings and we will check them over.

    The guy who installed my security system was a PC guy who did not know much about Macs. I am not sure just what he did but I have had multiple issues with internet connectivity ever since - SecuritySpy being just one. I am a university professor and my students tell me that PC stands for "piece of crap". I think they might be right. It will be a few days before I can get back to sorting out things. Thanks for your help.
