Hi guys

I'm using SecuritySpy for a few years with Panasonic IP Cams, never had any trouble, it works great

I tried to add Foscam IP.... it was not a good idea.. cheap but very unstable

I added a D-Link 2310L POE, and it works very well, but... I have this kind of message every day..

18-11-2013 1134-55: Error communicating with the network device "xxxxxxxx" 3.1.3,10,835 Excessive packet loss from network device, the network may be too slow or defective, or this computer may be overloaded. Check the network and/or reduce this camera's frame rate.

I tried to change the frame rate(25 to 15) but it doesn't really make any difference..

Obviously, my Mac Mini is not overloaded (max 20% proc time) and Gb/s network...

The thing is, the camera is always working....

Am I doing something wrong with my settings, maybe ??

Any idea ?

Cheers

Michel

  • Hi Michel,

SecuritySpy reports this error when it discovers some packets missing from the media stream (specifically a 4% packet loss over the last 40 seconds). This will most likely result in a certain amount of corrupt video/audio. This error is generated for informational purposes only: SecuritySpy will ignore the damaged bit of data and will continue capturing as normal.

The typical cause is a network or computer that is too slow to keep up with the rate of incoming data from the camera, but this doesn't seem likely in your case from your description. Some cameras themselves could be dropping packets due to low memory or bad firmware, and we have seen this problem ourselves with some cameras where we know the network and computer are easily fast enough.

I would advise checking to see if there is a firmware update for your camera as this might fix the problem. Otherwise, if you don't get these errors very often and video corruption isn't an obvious problem in the captured video, I would say that it's safe to ignore these messages.

    Hope this helps.
