New iOS app missing notification previews

Just updated to the new iOS app. Love the flurry of updates! Unfortunately the previews for notifications stopped showing. I get the notifications, but no pictures.

I force-quit the SecuritySpy server and even rebooted the machine. I’ve also tried to delete the server from the iOS app and then added it again.

Running the latest versions of everything….

Anyone else seeing this?

  • To add to this; devices with the older version of the app still show the previews.

  • Sorry about this, sounds like it's due to one of the many changes in the recent app update, however I can't seem to reproduce this problem. We'll need to investigate further. Please email us and include the following:

    • A debug file from macOS SecuritySpy (SecuritySpy menu > Debug > Create Debug File On Desktop).
    • In the iOS app, tap the "i" icon next to the server on the Servers screen - an info panel pops up - include a screenshot of this.
    • Can you confirm that at the time you receive the notification, your iOS device is able to connect to the SecuritySpy server?
  • Hello Ben, I'm another user who noticed this behavior too, and will be sending you the information requested shortly. Thank you for having a look into this!

I believe we have identified the cause of this problem - app update coming soon!

  • Thanks Ben, just chiming as we are seeing the same issue as well.

  • Also just confirming the same issue. It also seems like the notifications are a bit delayed. No real evidence of it, so may just be subjective.

  • Same issue here no previews. Also on latest iOS 26.2. Has a fix been submitted to Apple’s App Store? It’s fairly frustrating we can revert versions on the App Store in situations like this.

  • Same issue here too

tried turning off and on notifications and also restarting the Mac and iOS devices still no go

  • The update to fix this should drop tomorrow or the day after.

  • The new 1.8.6 update is now available from the App Store.

  • Updated! Thanks Ben.

  • Just a heads up this isn’t resolved on my instance - previews aren’t showing. I’m running v5 if that matters.

  • Same, I updated and am still not getting previews in the notifications and they are also still delayed. I also don’t see the toggle to turn on and off the status light

  • That's unfortunate - there must be something specific to each of your setups here. We'll look into this further - please email us and provide:

    • A debug file (SecuritySpy menu Debug Create Debug File On Desktop).
    • Let me know if the notification issue happens only when connected over the local network (i.e. iOS device on WiFi at the same location as macOS SecuritySpy), or when only connected remotely, or both.

@ConorMck for the setting, go to the Servers screen in the app, and tap the "Settings" button top-left.

  • Hrmmm. I updated to the newest version and the only difference is the cameras are in two columns instead of one now.

Still no previews. I’ll try and send additional info requested.

  • I think we have now identified the problem, which is related to SSL connections where the certificate is invalid (e.g. LAN connections, or those to IP addresses). This is why it's only affecting a few users, because normally LAN connections are HTTP rather than HTTPS, and normally WAN connections will have a valid certificate when using our viewcam.me DDNS system. We've prepared a new update with a fix - just now waiting for Apple to approve this for public beta testing, and then we'll send the testing link to affected users so that we can ensure the fix is correct before releasing an official update. Thanks for your patience.

  • Might be something in there. The servers I am using have static IPs. I just setup a valid cert on the "main" server though and there is no change.

  • There is now a 1.8.7 update available from the App Store that should reliably fix this issue. The required change was related to acceptance of invalid SSL certificates when obtaining the notification image (this is safe, since the user would have to have already given their permission to accept the certificate when adding the server to the app - this permission simply wasn't being carried over to the notification extension that handles notification images).

  • Can confirm the latest update fixes thumbnails on notifications.

  • Is there something I have to do to get previews back? I’ve updated to the latest iOS app (1.8.7). Have tried uninstalling the iOS app and restarting my SecuritySpy computer and still no previews.

  • Hi @khaidottk there are now no known issues in the app, so if you still aren't getting previews, this must be something specific to your setup. So that we can advise you further, please email us and include a debug file (SecuritySpy menu > Debug > Create Debug File On Desktop), and let us know exactly the circumstances that you do/don't get notification preview images: when on your local WiFi? When over the Internet? Both?
