Does viewcam.me way of accessing SS remotely require port forwarding

My understanding is that this works regardless of any port forwarding. Is this correct ?

  • The short answer is that yes it does require port forwarding. The longer answer is that there are two main ways to achieve remote access into your SecuritySpy system:

Port forwarding - this requires two things:

    • The router must be configured to forward incoming connections from the Internet on port 8001 to the Mac running SecuritySpy. Enable the "Automatic port forwarding" option for HTTPS under Settings > Web, and SecuritySpy will attempt to do this for you automatically, which works for most routers.
    • A DDNS name is required, giving you a permanent Internet hostname that will automatically update when your public IP address changes. This functionality is built into SecuritySpy, which provides you with a "name.viewcam.me" domain for this purpose. SecuritySpy also automatically creates an SSL certificate with this domain, to fully authenticate the secure HTTPS connection.

Virtual network - in cases where port forwarding isn't possible, or for when you want the maximum possible level of security, this is a good solution. The full setup is detailed here: Remote Access Without Port Forwarding. In this case, a DDNS address like viewcam.me isn't required, because you use the virtual IP address of the SecuritySpy Mac to connect from any other device on the virtual network.
