I currently have re-encoding turned off. But I'm contemplating using SS for my OSD instead of what is built into the camera. But this would mean re-encoding every camera, all of the time. Is this a ridiculous expectation of an M1 and M2 Pro mini with 8 and 12 4k cameras, in that order?

    This will certainly add a significant amount of load to each machine, but whether it is possible depends on the frame rates of the cameras. The M1 has a limited ability to decode/encode video data, so it's unlikely to be able to encode eight 4K streams with a reasonable frame rate. The M2 Pro is a much more capable chip, so that may perform adequately for this task.

    However, I would advise against even trying this. Instead, can you get the cameras' own text overlays working well enough for your needs? What is the problem with them at present?
