"RTSP" vs. "H.265 RTSP"

edited September 1 in SecuritySpy

I just set up a new SV3C 4K PTZ cam.

I set its Video Coding for H265 using the web browser interface, but SS Camera Info still reported it as encoding H264.

I checked the cam with SS, and see in the Device Tab there are RTSP and H.265 RTSP settings.

I think on my other cams, the RTSP setting, along with setting the cam via browser at H265 was sufficient to have the cam encode H265.

It looks like with this new cam, the SS format needs to be set at H265 RTSP to get the camera to encode H265.

I'm not sure if it's the cam or SS, but I see all the older cams have the H265 RTSP setting, too, but encode H265 with just the RTSP setting, and don't need the H265 RTSP setting.

Anyway, if anyone is setting up a newer SV3C 4K cam, you might need to change that setting in SS/Device/Format to H265 RTSP to get the camera to encode H265.

  • With the ONVIF profile, there are three options (as of SecuritySpy 6.5 and later):

    • RTSP
    • RTSP H.264
    • RTSP H.265

With the codec-specific formats, SecuritySpy will send a request to the camera during the ONVIF negotiation to attempt to set it to the chosen codec. With the generic RTSP option, it won't do this, so whatever the camera is already set to will be used.

So you can either set the codec in the camera and use the generic RTSP option, or you can choose one of the codec-specific options in SecuritySpy, so that you don't have to go through the extra step of configuring the camera's encoding settings.

  • Nice, thanks for the explanation.

I'll set them all on the SS RTSP H.265 setting.
