Better quality on recordings

Hi

Whats the best way to get better quality recording from my cams without crippling my network, I got 4 cams, and storage to spare :-) the attached image is the setting I got now

  • The resolution should be set to the highest available option. If you are worried about network bandwidth, I would suggest that a frame rate of 10 is sufficient. With a frame rate of 10, a key frame interval of 30 is reasonable. VBR is a good idea, so keep that. The bit rate, at 6mbps is quite high, but presumably this is an upper limit, since under VBR the bit rate is automatically varied by the encoder.

  • Thanks Ben, so I shouldn't mess with these settings in your opinion??

  • I need a new SSD disc, and the most logical is to buy big, so im buying a 2TB disk, this way I can save my recording for like a month before SS need to delete to make room. I tried to max out the space on my 1 TB disc, but this make the iPad/iPhone app slow and sluggish...guess its because it need to index them and load thumbnails. Is there a way to ex. only to load the latest week, and then only load the oldest in case i need to watch them??

  • The settings look fine, except that I can't tell if it's currently set to the highest resolution - make sure it is. Also, as mentioned 6M is a high bitrate. Hopefully it won't actually be this high due to VBR, but if you see unusually large files being created, try changing this setting downwards. You could also check the data rate column for this camera in the Camera Info window in SecuritySpy. A stream like this shouldn't be more than around 500 KB/s - if it is, reduce the camera's bitrate setting.

It's a good idea to get more storage than you think you need, and also good to go for an SSD, as they offer excellent performance.

The iOS app currently shows the files newest-to-oldest in a continuous list that adds more entries as you scroll to the bottom. It should load everything quite quickly, but this does depend on the speed of the network connection between the Mac and the iOS device, and also on the speed of the capture drive. You do also have the option to filter the files by camera and by event, to find just the ones you want. Currently there is no way to ask for a particular day (you'll need to scroll down until you find the day you want), but we are considering adding this feature in the future.

  • Thanks, ill check it later, should the main and sub stream be the same?

  • Unless configured otherwise, SecuritySpy will use the main stream, so it doesn't matter what is set for the substream.

I adjusted the bitrate to 4M, and set the recording codec to H.265 in stead of H.264, in “compression”…that cut the filesize aprox. by a third, recordings looks the same tho 🙂
