Feature Suggestion: Make the red 'X' on the iOS and iPadOS apps larger and thicker

Hi Ben I had brought this up with you maybe a year or two ago via email and don't think I've noticed any change

I'm sure many people other than myself use wall-mounted iPads with SS running to keep tabs on our camera feeds

When, for whatever reason, the feed is lost, the little red 'X' is barely visible, especially if you're just glancing at the feed from across the room

In fact, the red 'X' is so hard to see that if you don't notice it, one would think the visible feed is a live view when, in fact, it's not

If you can either make that red 'X' much larger and thicker so that it's obvious from anywhere that would be appreciated; alternatively, have some other way of notifying the viewer that the feed has been lost and that what he or she is looking at is not live

Thank you

Comments

  • Hey @Ben any comment regarding this? Anything in the works to improve this user experience? Thank you

  • I agree with Pinkoos' comment. I get caught out with this not infrequently.

  • Hi @pinkoos, I do think this is a good idea, however we haven't decided whether to change the current behaviour, and we have been focussing our development efforts on other features that we have judged as being higher priority. User feedback is the main way we decide which features to work on, but in this case we only have two users requesting this particular change so far (you and now @nbraude), so I hope you understand that this won't necessarily cause us to make modifications to the software. I can't promise anything, but we'll take a look at this when preparing the next release.

  • Thanks Ben but I must say that my suggestion seems something more along a common sense thing to do rather than only doing it if you get tons of feedback asking for it

I'm not a coder so I definitely can't speak to whether this little change would be difficult to do on your end or if it's something as simple as changing a line or two of code or even just changing some integer or variable value - I don't know, so I'm not implying anything one way or another

Regardless, thank you for fielding this suggestion and considering it

  • We certainly want to make modifications on the basis of common sense, which is why I'm agreeing with you that this would be a good idea to tweak in the next update. I'm just saying that we have limited development resources and we have to prioritise features, and one way we do this is by user feedback. It's quite not as simple as changing a few lines of code - we'd have to regenerate the icon in a higher resolution - but it isn't a lot of work. I'll see what we can do.

  • Thank you for the consideration

The next time I lose a feed on the iPad I'll try to remember to take a pic from close and far to demonstrate the issue I'm having and post back to this thread

  • That would be helpful, thanks. Screen sizes vary, and most of our testing is done on iPhones since this is what most users are running our app on.

  • Hi I’m attaching a couple pics to try and illustrate the issue I’m having with a wall mounted iPad - 1st pic is from maybe 3 feet away and the 2nd is closeup

Imagine just walking by the iPad from several feet away and glancing at your feeds - can you tell which feed is not live?

    Thank you

  • Thanks for the screenshots, this really helps to understand what you are describing. Perhaps an option for a whole-frame red cross would be the way to go here. Seems to me like tweaking the size may not be enough - what works for one use case (checking your cameras on an iPhone in your hand) is very different from what works for the use case you are describing (glancing across the room to an always-on display).

  • Hi Ben, yes any kind of added option would be greatly appreciated, whatever you think would serve the purpose best

There have been several times on our kitchen wall mounted iPad where we've glanced at the "Driveway" feed to confirm the garage door was shut when, in actuality, the feed was not live and the door was not in fact shut, but we didn't see the little red 'X' from afar

    Thank you
