Any changes to cpu usage info?

Hi,

Last couple of weeks I have noticed in the camera info window some of my cameras have a higher than normal cpu load. I did the latest update a few weeks ago and have only noticed the issue since then. Was there any changes made regarding how that number is calculated or should i investigate further? I notice the column is called Duty now so i thought maybe there was some other changes which prompted that.

I use my old iMac (2012 i7) which has hardware decoding for h264 but not h265. I have one h265 camera which has always been around 22% and that hasnt changed at all.

I have 5 cameras that are h264 which all used to be less than 5% but now a 5mp cam is 20%, and a 720p cam is 11%.

Do you have any insights please?

  • Yes, this measure has changed.

Previously, SecuritySpy attempted to quantify specifically the CPU usage caused by each camera. But, over the years this has become more and more difficult to quantify and less and less useful, with many of the resource-intensive tasks that SecuritySpy does being taken over by specialist hardware (GPU, Neural Engine, Media Engine etc.).

So we have switched to measuring and reporting "duty", which is the the percentage of time that some active processing is happening for each camera. As mentioned above, this doesn't translate directly to CPU usage, since the processing may be elsewhere, but it's a useful measure because it provides a direct comparison of total resource usage between cameras.

For example, if you are getting any warnings being reported of the Mac being overloaded, this duty value will guide you to take action on those cameras that are using the most resources (e.g. reducing their frame rates).
