New camera not showing in iOs/ATv app..

I have a 4-camera licence, I am messing with a new camera so now have 5 on my network. After much faffing about (not SS's fault!) I have managed to get it up and running and it is now part of my 'group', and shows up on the second monitor I have next to my iMac, so all is good there.

Problem is, when I run the iOs app only the original 4 cameras show up and it also doesnt show on the Apple TV app.

I am sure this is a simple issue where I am just missing something obvious, perhaps it is cause by the fact I only have a 4 camera license?

Any advice appreciated!

  • It is just a licensing issue. Cameras beyond the licensed number can only be viewed on the licensed machine. You can't do further manipulations of the extra camera like recording it or transmitting to another device.
  • Thanks very much for that, am getting sone more camera delivered so will upgrade when I know they all work. I did think it may be something like that but didn't know for sure as the instructions that came with the camera were very poor and I didn't know whether it had installed properly,

From what I understand, the four camera license includes 4 hybrid thermal cameras that have multiple streams and the multiple streams don't count against the license. But do they count against the number of cameras that the SecuritySpy server transmits to iOS or other devices?

I ask because I added a fourth camera to my four camera license, and for some reason I can't get all the cameras to show up in my view-only software that pulls from the Security Spy server. I choose select all cameras from server, but not all show up. One hybrid camera shows the optical stream, but not the thermal stream, and the recently added hybrid camera doesn't show at all. They're all showing on the iMac that is running Security Spy, but for some reason they're not all available across the LAN.

  • Hi @AlaskanOffGridder to clarify the situation: if you add the same camera twice using identical device settings, the second camera instance will not count towards the license limit; only the first. But, if the device settings are different in any way (e.g. the input number is different), then the second instance will count towards the limit. This is because if there is any change in device settings, the second instance could be a different camera; there is no way for SecuritySpy to know that it's the same camera.

In practice, if any user is in the situation where they are adding multiple streams from the same camera with different device settings (e.g. to obtain both the visible and the infrared streams from a thermal camera), and therefore exceeding their camera limit, we are sympathetic to this and will offer discounts for upgrading their license for more cameras. If this is the case for you please email us - we consider these kinds of requests on a case-by-case basis (it doesn't come up as an issue very often).

The only exception to this is multi-sensor cameras, where each stream selects from a different sensor. We count these as separate cameras, because that's basically what they are (they're just in the same housing).

But, if you have a 4-camera license, and no more than 4 cameras instances (as you describe above), then the license isn't the problem in your case. It's either the case that the client hasn't been configured to pull in the video stream for this new camera. Or, perhaps the web account in use isn't allowing access to this new camera (check the permissions for the web account under Settings > Web on the server instance of SecuritySpy).

Thanks Ben. All four cameras (three of them are hybrid and have separate thermal streams so I have SEVEN windows showing) are all working on the iMac with the four-camera license. Four windows are optical and three are thermal. From four cameras total.

I'll take a look at the permissions for the web account. I have just one account on the iMac running Security Spy and it's showing some cameras as described. Do I need to set permissions for that account for each camera individually?

    Edit:

Or am I supposed to be setting this in the client copy of Security Spy?

On the client copy, trying to pull camera feeds from the server, it seems the input stream is limited to 4. If I select 5 or higher I get no camera feed. That's why I was wondering if it was a license thing.

If it is a license limitation, I'm fine with only seeing four windows on the client copy of Security Spy if there is some way I can re-arrange the cameras on the server to get the four on the client I'm looking for.

    Much appreciated!

  • It does appear that the four-camera license will allow the multiple streams from four cameras to be displayed on the host version of Security Spy, but the server will only stream the first four (in order) streams to a client version of Security Spy. So the client cannot see all the streams from all four cameras.

I rearranged the four streams I want to see on the client as the first four on the server and that works well enough for me.

Actually I'll just go ahead and buy the next license up so I can get all the cameras on the client.

Edit: just upgraded and now I can see all the channels from my four cameras using the eight camera license on my client machine.

  • Great to hear that the larger license has solved this for you @AlaskanOffGridder - thanks for upgrading! To add a bit more information that may be helpful to others:

By default, the first X cameras in your X-camera license will work fully, while any cameras added beyond this will work in "view-only mode", which means that they won't be available via the web interface. To make sure that the most important cameras are first in the list, you can rearrange the order using the option in the gear menu under Settings > Cameras.

Or, if you don't want to rearrange cameras, you can use the "Operate in view-only mode" option for any particular camera, which you'll find at Settings > Cameras > Setup > Advanced Options. This allows you to have cameras near the top of the list that don't count towards the license limit.

  • Thanks for the clarification, Ben.

  • That is a very handy tip which I didn't know about, Ben. Nice one.

I've an 8x and a 1x licence and that has been deployed in the 1x set up. Thank you.
