PTZ Settings - Not working via Web but works through the desktop

I have three cameras that have Pan and Tilt.

Two of them are quite old COOLEAD L-610WS (also known as Wansview/FosCam I believe.)

One of them is a new Wansview 1080P NCM625GA

For the 610W's, I am using the Wansview profile
For the 625, I am using ONVIF as the Wansview profiles do not work.

As for SecuritySpy, I am on the latest version 4.0.8 as I recently upgraded from v3.xx

Right, here are the problems I'm having:

1- For the older Coolead 610's, SecuritySpy v3 used to pick up audio. However, v4 doesn't.
2- For the newer Wansview 625, the PT is only working with up, left and right. Down doesn't work.
3- I have preset PTZ for the older Coolead 610's on the desktop application. Works as expected. However, if I click on one of the preset buttons from the web interface, it does some random moves. These random moves are exactly what's actioned if I use Apple Script to execute them as well.

The only reason I upgraded to Version 4 was in the hope that the auto patrol feature would be built in to SecuritySpy but alas that's not the case. I just wished the Apple Script thing was working for all of the cameras.

Any suggestions?

  • Any ideas?
  • Not sure about most of the issues which is why I haven't answered earlier -
    1) try the 4.0.10 just released to see if it might help with the audio - try ONVIF if it doesn't to see if it might work that way.

2 & 3) Pan & Tilt I know is tricky because there are many ways it can be implemented. Check for firmware updates for the camera's - sometimes they have issues that affect one camera when it works with others - when you are lucky they catch and fix those issues.
(I've worked with a few different programs like Security Spy, and PTZ may as well be random on if things will work with any given camera - and can change with updates of the software or firmware)

Myself I've mostly switched to using higher resolution wide angle cameras instead of PTZ (can't do motion detection on a camera that is "patrolling") - will get the last PTZ changed out this next summer likely.
  • Hi @BYazici - sorry you've had problems. To answer your questions:

    1. Audio was never supported on these cameras in any version of SecuritySpy, perhaps previously you were using the Mac's audio input?

    2. What device profile setting are you using in SecuritySpy for this camera?

    3. This is very strange. By "web interface", are you referring to the camera's web interface, or SecuritySpy's web interface? Can you work out any pattern in what the web interface preset buttons do, or are they truly random (e.g. does clicking preset 1 go to the same place each time, or a random different place)?

SecuritySpy doesn't have built-in auto-patrol, but there is a simple AppleScript to do this.

    Hi Both,

Thanks for your replies. I've updated to 4.0.10 and hasn't made any difference I'm afraid.

In answer your questions and comments:

    1. Audio is supported. I just forgot to turn it on the settings. It is now being recorded for all cameras.

    2. As per my original post, for the Wansview 1080P NCM625GA, I am using ONVIF and for the COOLEAD L-610WS, I am using the Wansview profile.

    3. By the "web interface", I mean the Security Spy's web interface. Using the desktop version, I can program the PTZ settings for each camera and they work perfectly even if I turn off the program and come back to it. However, if I press the preset buttons using Security Spy's web interface, it just moves to random places. (Always the same random place though if that makes any sense. I.e. "Preset 1" on the desktop will take the camera where I want it but "Preset 1" via the SS Web Interface will take it somewhere else but always to that place.)

If I activate the presets using the AppleScript's they go to the same "random" place as it would do if I'd pressed the preset button using SS's web interface.

I do have the motion trigger switched on via Security Spy. Are you saying that the auto patrol scripts will not work if the motion trigger is armed/configured?

    ------------

The other problems I'm having is that on the Wansview 1080p NCM625GA, using the ONVIF profile, the left, right and up PTZ buttons work perfectly using both the desktop and the SS web interface. However, the down button doesn't work.

By the way, the whole auto patrol script/web interface preset issue is happening on both the L-610WSs and the NCM625GA.
  • If a PTZ is "patrolling" motion detection will constantly be triggered (and actions like email if the actions are active).

I just double-checked one of my Foscam Pan & Tilt cameras - the desktop app, web interface, and iOS apps all trigger the presets correctly.
  • Hmm. It's a bit disappointing that patrol will trigger motion detection. (Though I have no idea of the complexity of calculating movement detection whilst the camera is moving on patrol, I imagine it must be hard!)

Since the primary reason I wanted to patrol was to capture a larger area, I guess the solution will be to upgrade the cameras to a wide-view ones.

  • When you initiate a PTZ movement (including preset positions) from SecuritySpy (via it's UI, or the web interface, or AppleScript), it will automatically turn off motion for a few seconds to allow the camera to move, so this won't trigger recording. It's only if you initiate a movement from outside SecuritySpy (e.g. from the camera's own web interface) that you will get problems with this triggering SecuritySpy's recording.

I've had a look and can see no problems with the web or AppleScript preset controls. When it goes to a "random" place, this must be coming from somewhere. In SecuritySpy's user interface, can you try all the preset buttons in turn, to see if one of them directs the camera to the "random" place. Is there any pattern that you can detect (e.g. preset 1 in the software's UI gives you the same location as preset 2 via the web interface)?
  • Hi Ben,

Ah. Ok. That's better. I knew PTZ movement from the camera UI or similar would trigger motion detection by SecuritySpy. That's logical. But great to hear that one initiated by AppleScript would work the same way it would do if it was from the Desktop or the Web UI.

I've tried doing some stuff remotely today but not having any luck. At the moment, the web interface is not allowing me to "memorise" any preset locations. (I've even done it via the headers get commands (112, 113 etc and the corresponding 12,13 to see if it worked with no joy).

I'll have another play at home tonight.

  • Hi Ben & Brian,

Do you guys have an email I can send link to with a video to a screen capture I did.

It will allow you to understand hopefully what I'm trying to explain.
