Security Spy Email Notifications Stopped Working

I have Security spy 3.4.10 installed on a Mac Mini with Email Notifications turned on for my front door camera. It uses my iCloud account to send the email and this has worked for years. However, yesterday I upgraded to IOS 10 on my phone, and iPad. The upgrade process went through some new authentication stuff for my iCloud account but as a result it looks like Security Spy can no longer authenticate to the iCloud email server.

I get the following error when trying to Test the Email Connection:

Connecting to email server...
Communicating with server...
Error 535 5.7.8 Bad username or password (Authentication failed).
535, 127036

I logged out of iCloud on this Mac Mini machine and logged back in to make sure it was properly added to my iCloud account but that didn't help.

I tried using Gmail and it failed as well saying that unsecured software was trying to access my google account. It gave me a choice to authorize the access but that it would make my account less secure, so I opted not to.

Are the email settings outdated on v3 of Security Spy? Would v4 work? It's a crazy expensive upgrade from v3 to 4 so if it doesn't work I don't want to spend the cash.

Any suggestions to get iCloud email working with v3 Security Spy again?

  • This appears to cover what you are running into:
    https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204152
    specifically the section:
"How do I sign in to my account using an app that doesn't support entering two-step verification codes?"
  • Same thing happened to me, I knew it had to be the two factor verification thing, but not sure of the remedy. I think BrianM's suggestion looks promising. thanks BrianM!!!
Also there is an option for Yahoo users to allow access to apps with "less secure sign in".
