External Hard Drive Storage

I am concerned about hard drive space in general for storage. I have added three external storage drives (one is an Airport but that is for backups only ).

Is there any option on the current version to store the images/movie on an external hard drive instead of the documents folder which is getting gigbytes bigger?

If not, could it be an option?

  • Yes, this option is called "Capture Destination" and it's at the bottom of the Preferences -> Cameras -> Setup section.
  • I have a raspberry pi with a 3TB usb drive attached. I keep it in a locked cupboard and every time motion is detected the video its transferred to it. I like the pi as it's so small, only uses a tiny amount of power and very little heat. I installed wembmin on it as well to make remote admin easy.
  • I have a 12 TB thunderbolt RAID attached for storage. Works very well.
The one caveat I would mention is that when you add a new camera, the new camera's storage location defaults to your internal drive rather than a previously specified external.

Remember to set the capture destination for each new camera. Otherwise, your internal will mysteriously fill up with video files you thought were going to your external drive.
  • Thank you for the assistance, I am saving to the external drive with no problems.
