Nest cam

So Nest Cam at £8 a month seems steep just to see even that day's videos. Kind of makes the camera pointless. What a rip off.

So, er, can we use SecuritySpy with Nest Cam(s)? Ever hopeful :)

  • Hi Richard,

Unfortunately Nest is a closed system and their cameras don't work with third-party software such as SecuritySpy, precisely because they want to tie you into their subscription. If you let me know your requirements I'll be able to recommend a suitable camera - there are plenty of good inexpensive ones on the market that do work with SecuritySpy.
  • Hi Ben

Thanks - just really looking for something to watch the front door, and notice if anyone comes in that isn't me :) The Nest was also rubbish at differentiating between window reflections of passing cars, so I had setup a zone which basically outlined the front door except for the glass (i currently live on a busy main road, so lots of traffic to contend with)

It worked kind of ok, except it would either always send an alert for any "motion" in the entire frame, or no alerts at all (yet would record video if motion was detected in my zoned area - but not alert me no matter what buttons i pushed)

So the Nest is a total disappointment. Won't take much to improve on it, would love some recommendations, thanks!

My internet base station is in the entrance hall, so a wired camera is ok too :)

    Cheers,
    Richard
  • Hi Richard,

Good idea - the entranceway is often the most useful place to put a camera. I'm assuming you'll want a physically small camera, with good image quality and a built-in microphone, and I would suggest any of the following.

    Vivotek IP8152
    Vivotek IP8133
    Hikvision DS-2CD2412F-I
    Dahua DH-IPC-K100
    Axis M1054

    Hope this helps!
  • Hi Ben,

That's great - I will hopefully be able to look at those this weekend, your description is perfect - small, good image and built-in mic.

    Cheers,
    Richard
