Installed El Capitan update, now email alerts stop working

I have 4 cameras and everything has been running smoothly, i.e receiving alerts, jpg and video clips are generated. Yesterday I installed an El Capitan update. Ever since the update I've stopped receiving email alerts. The jpg and video files are created as usual and I can view them, but I'm not receiving the email alerts with the attached jpg files any more. When I test the connection to the mail server (gmail) via the Securityspy's Mail Preference tab, I receive the following message: "Timeout error: the server did not respond". I've tried the Yahoo email server--same results. The only change is the OS X update. My email client (default OS X client) works perfectly fine and I'm sending and receiving email normally.

Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz

El Capitan 10.11.6

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Securityspy is rendered useless without those alerts obviously.

Thanks,
Michael

P.S. I do want to mention that I did upgrade Securityspy to 4.0.3 last week but I've had no problems whatsoever.

  • It's strange that the upgrade to El Capitan would have any bearing of this specific functionality, this certainly isn't a known problem, and I can't think of anything in this OS X system update that could cause this. Could you please email us a screenshot of your email settings, so that we can check them over? A timeout error would indicate some problem with these settings.
  • My apologizes for the delay getting back to you. So I ended up looking at the email settings and yes, for some reason, when I was troubleshooting this issue earlier, I forgot to change the mail server from imap.gmail.com back to smtp.gmail.com. Once I made the change, I was able to connect ok so disregard this issue. My mistake.

Anyway, I'm still trying to understand why I was missing the emails associated with the jpgs and video clips that were created by SecuritySpy on my server. It seems that version 3.4.10 works fine so I decided to try using 4.0.3 again this week and I haven't had any problems until today. I stopped receiving emails for just one camera this time. I disarmed/armed all options for this camera (continuous, motion and action) but no luck so I restarted SecuritySpy--I began to receive email once again.

I noticed that there is a new version 4.0.4 available. I'll upgrade and see if that corrects the problem.

btw, I combed through the log file and found this message:

29/07/2016 07:27:16: Error sending an email (). 4.0.3,127005,800 The operation timed out.

If I continue to run into this problem with the new version, I'll pipe up.

    Thanks!
  • Sorry but 4.0.4 didn't work. Rolled back to 3.4.10.
