Dropbox and Google Drive for Motion events

SecuritySpy remore apps are blocked at work unless I switch off the company network. LTE can be slow at best or spotty so I have been experimenting storing motion events to google drive and dropbox. Google drive works well but keeps running into sync issues where I have to manually ask it to try and re-sync the files once I get home and dropbox will not play the .mov files that SecuritySpy uploads. The file size for motion events right now appear to be in the 5-12 MB area.

Anyone have a better suggestion or recommended setting changes that might make what I am trying to accomplish work better.

I am currently using 3 4MP Hikvision camera but only two are set to record motion events most of the time.

Thanks

  • On your company network, do they block access to certain ports? By default, SecuritySpy's web server operates over port 8000, so this may be the issue. The solution would be to configure your router's port forwarding rule to use a WAN port of 80 and a LAN port of 8000. Then, when an incoming connection arrives to your router on port 80 (which is the standard HTTP port), it will forward it to SecuritySpy on port 8000.

With Dropbox, you may not be able to play the .mov files via its web interface or app. To get around this you'll need to configure SecuritySpy to create .m4v files instead. To do this, SecuritySpy must be recording H.264 video and AAC audio (if audio is present). So configure your camera to send these formats to SecuritySpy, and configure SecuritySpy to record the video and audio streams directly to the movie files it creates - see the Optimising Performance section of the user manual for more information on how to do this.
  • I am in a control center environment and all ports are blocked or filter. I've tried 80 and 8000 with no luck. I'll work on the second part later this week and reports back. Thanks for your help
  • I looked in the optimizing performance section and still am not sure how I set SS to record the h.264 stream. When I set up the camera I used the Hikvision profile vs Onvif. It my understanding the main stream coming from the camera is already in the format, but I could be mistaken on this. Anyone you can help this novice out it would be appreciated.
  • I use Dropbox to record stills and motion, including from a Hikvision camera. Dropbox on iOS (iPad/iPhone) plays the movies just fine. My video files are .m4v, not .mov. The cameras I have all deliver H.264 directly to SS so I don't need to re-encode/compress.
  • My stream is set to h264 but I can figure out how to make SS safe them as m4v files
  • It's a setting somewhere I think. Make sure things like "Recompress video..." is not turned on. Also in the compression tab it is set to H.264 just in case.
  • Hikvision cameras do supply H.264 video, but they don't supply AAC audio as far as I know, so it's probably the audio format that is preventing the files from being .m4v files. Do you need audio? If not, turn it off.

If you do need audio, and you want to create .m4v files, then you should enable the "Recompress audio data" option under the Preferences -> Cameras -> Device window in SecuritySpy, and make sure that the audio compression is set to AAC in the Preferences -> Compressionsection.

The "Recompress video data" setting should be left off.
