Time lapse videos

How long are your time lapse videos? My one hour videos are too large to view remotely. Curious what some of you set these to so that you can view from a mobile phone when you are out and about.

  • jms703 I'm having the same issue. I have some cameras record continuously, set to make new file every hour, and the file is about 500 mb, at only 2 frames per second. This makes it difficult to view and difficult to manage files. Any suggestions would be appreciated. What settings are you using for a camera?
  • For the most efficient file size, you want to use H.264 compression. Ideally, your cameras will be able to supply this, and if you aren't using a text overlay or a transformation, SecuritySpy is able to capture this directly to disk without any in-software recompression (see the Optimising Performance section of the user manual for further information).

However there is one caveat there, in that if SecuritySpy is not recompressing the stream, it won't be able to change the frame rate. So even if you specify 2fps for the capture rate in SecuritySpy, this may be ignored. So, the best thing to do here is to set the camera itself to supply video at 2fps. This may be the key to reducing your file sizes for continuous-capture movies.
  • FWIW, setting capture videos to 10 minutes instead of 1 hour has obviously improved the wait.
