ethernet switches
OK I'm burnt out troubleshooting framerates, etc and it seems I might be better off using an ethernet switch. Didn't know anything about them till today but been doing some research. I'm using 3 HD ip cameras, one of them 1080 all wired but I'm connecting my mac wirelessly. So realistically if I got a switch and wired the cameras and the mac to it would I get any benefit in performance from my cameras. At the moment I'm having to dumb down resolution etc to get decent frame rates,

I'm tweaking my cameras in Avtechs own viewer, NOT SS.
Just installed a switch, dead cheap, £13-00 ! I went into the bit rate configurations for my two Avtech cameras. One of them is 1280x1024 at max res. I've set the quality to 'High' H264 and I'm getting 12 to 30 fps ( it's VBR, no option to change that ). Picture quality is excellent, clean, sharp, I can read a moving number plate 100feet from the camera. With a series of tweaks I've now ascertained that the camera, at those settings will draw up to 13000kbs!! And with the switch and the mac wired to it as well both cameras are drawing their max necessary to deliver full res at High quality and as I said 12 to 30 fps. I call that a result. And I've noticed Ben that you posted such advice in the blog. Wish I'd read that before :-( .
At mpeg 4 the camera stretches to 14000kbs but it's only marginally better than the h264. So in my experience with using h264 in SS it produces really poor image quality in both Avtech cameras, no idea why.
I'm sending the Foscam back, in every way but one it's a great camera if you've never used one before and don't know any better. The image quality is really poor in low light and software controls make no difference. Tech support, Live Chat, is brilliant, reading off a list of FAQs with standard answers. When you get to why the camera produces poor video they bluff their pants off, with one red herring after another until your 10 days is up and you cant send it back. Mine is going back.
