"QuickTime Player can't open...."

Hi! I'm brand new to SecuritySpy, but have made considerable progress getting it set up with my 4 Sharx cameras and working the way I want. However, when I go to view any of the .mov files created when motion is detected, I get the error message that "QuickTime Player can't open ". This seems very strange, i.e. why would SecuritySpy not encode movies in a format that a Mac can play? I suspect it may simply be a case of my head being where the "sun don't shine". What am I missing or doing wrong?

    Disregard my question. I hadn't worked with the browser yet, but this morning discovered that it has a built-in Quicktime conversion tool. Problem solved.

    Hi Brian,

    SecuritySpy does in fact record standard QuickTime movie files (MOV). However there are subtle differences between the older QuickTime Player 7 and the newer QuickTime Player application that is part of QuickTime X. So please download QuickTime Player 7 from the above link as it has wider compatibility and should play back all the movie files that SecuritySpy produces.

    The latest versions of SecuritySpy, if they are receiving H.264 video from the camera, are able to create MP4 files instead of MOV files, which, in addition to playing in QuickTime Player 7 and QuickTime Player X, also play back in web browsers using HTML5, so this is the ideal format to use if possible.

    On the topic....with resent SS installed.

    I've upgraded from Mavericks to El Cap and discovered an issue. For some unknown reason El Cap moves these two plug-ins from the plug-in folder to the sub-disabled plug-in folder, resulting in Safari alerting me that I needed to install a Quicktime plugin.
    The warning provided a link to Apple so I went to the page, but there was no plugins. I was at a loss and needed access to my cameras through Safari.
    An internal search led me to the folder, inside the folder was another folder and there sat two that appeared to be QTime related. Needing to view my cameras I risked relocating them to the active folder and presto, back in business again.

    I don't know why this happened, so subsequently I searched for more info only to discover that others have had the same experience and solution.

    Hi Juan, good to hear you found this solution, yes this is the advice we are giving to customers who are experiencing this issue, so I'm sure your post will be helpful for other users researching this problem. As I mentioned above, if SecuritySpy is receiving and recording a H.264 video stream stream from the camera (or compressing to H.264 in software), then MP4 files will be created, which play back directly in the browser without requiring the QuickTime plugin. However for any other formats, MOV files will be created, which do require the QuickTime plugin for playback in web browsers.
