Security Spy Stress Test Core 2 Duo vs Quad Core iMac, Results Perplex?
Hi, I have Security Spy on 16 IP cams, recently updated to all Dahua dome 2 or 3mp (and a few Samsung). Implemented best practices outlined on this site, frame rate 10/20, 264h, no recompressions, do not use software for date on screen or flips. Set motion detection at 27 scale and 2secs, to record short 10 second movies, no continuous record or such.
Using on Core2 Mac Mini now, Apple's Activity Utility shows 136% of MacMini Core2 duo (1.83) CPU used with current SS version, no other apps than Activity Utility open or used.
Knew the Core2 duo was not up to it anyway based on calculator. But despite running at such high level, motion and feeds seem great. But a few green screens with the Samsung given they can't be adjusted fully as described elsewhere.
So tried my current model iMac 2.9 Quad core, 16ram, created clean user account, dragged over preferences for SS. Activity Monitor says "336%" of CPU of iMac. Even shows all four processors topping out.
All 16cams on one mid-end gigabit Netgear Pro POE switch, all gigabit ethernet in one townhouse size building.
So there are the variables, does going from 136% to 336% when more than doubling CPU power have any reason to happen?

The one thing I can think of is that on the dual-core Mac, the cameras may be slowing down their frame rates due to the Mac not being able to keep up. So if you look at the actual FPS numbers reported in the main video window for all the camera, and compare these between the two Macs, do you see a difference? I would be surprised if a dual-core Mac would be able to keep up with processing 16x IP cameras at 2-3 MP resolution and 10-20 frames per second, this sounds like too much data for this machine to process.
