At night i get bursts of swirling 'stuff' that looks like rain or snow but very obviously is not. Only with IR is on.
is the camera or SS?
thanks

  • I see this sometimes, and its usually bugs flying near the camera, they like the IR light. I have read that people should use IR Blasters that are away from the camera, and not use the IR on the camera itself if it becomes a hassle. Spiders are another issue I have... I will likely be moving to the IR blasters soon. :-D
  • Yes, this is a frequent problem with cameras with built-in LED illumination. Bugs, rain, snow etc, are brightly lit by the lights when these objects are right in front of the camera, and this is extrememly difficult for motion-detection algorighms to distinguish from "real" motion, hence these will trigger false-positive detections.

As Jononamission suggests, turning off the camera's built-in lights and using separate IR LED lights (or visible-light illumination) - placed away from the camera but illuminating the camera's view - resolves this problem. And visible-light illumination (dusk-dawn lighting) has the advantage of an additional deterrent to intruders.
