DDNS problems ?

Hi Ben,

I have been having some problems this morning with the DDNS service in SecuritySpy. I came to this forum and got a server not found error too (fwiw other webpages worked fine).
Is there a status page or log that you can verify if all is working well ?

Ifso, could you also please check friday June 5 around 22h45 CET, if the service was down ?
The reason I ask is because we were abroad at that day and at that moment we had our house broken in. I did get notifications in Spyglass, but I could not get any image. I blamed it on the storm then, but later we found out that the push notifications were legit.
I never found the cause why I could not get any image to view (not live and no search available), but this morning the exact same thing happened. So I wonder if the DDNS service was briefly down at that moment too.

For now I am configuring secondary routes directly to my external IP (it does not change often), in case viewcam.me does not respond, but it would be nice if you could confirm if there were problems with the service or not.

  • Hi Pete,

We haven't had any other reports of this, and I've just checked and the DDNS system is online and working fine. It's possible that there were a temporary outage between your internet provider and our DNS server at the time you mention, though this is not shown in the outage log maintained by our DNS provider.

However you don't need the DDNS system to be working in order for SecuritySpy to record video. If you got a notification in Spyglass, this means that SecuritySpy was triggered (presumably by motion in the video image), and will have recorded some video based on your motion-detection capture settings. As long as this footage hasn't been automatically deleted (due to the hard drive filling up), you should be able to locate and view it.

If you haven't set SecuritySpy to record upon motion detection you really should; don't just rely on notifications and live video viewing. Apple doesn't guarantee the timeliness (or even the delivery) of these notifications, so they shouldn't be relied upon for such a crucial application.
  • Hi Ben, SecuritySpy is constantly recording timelapses fulltime, and also the regular motion capture is set.
I do have good footage of the break in. It is because the burglars noticed the cameras that they ran away. The police was even impressed by the quality of the footage and SecuritySpy. They had rarely seen such a comprehensive camera system :-)

I just asked because I had never found the cause why my feed to Spyglass broke at that time, and this morning it happened again.
I'm sure it was just a temporary glitch somewhere.

To be on the safe side, I have now set up multiple routes, even directly to the cameras with port forwarding on my router.
If something happens again, I now at least have different options to reach and see my home.
