Mac mini and 8 - 3mp cameras

I just got this all installed. Running SS on a mac mini with 2ghz Intel core i7 Proc. 8gb ram. 2 - 256gb internal SSD drives. I have 4 - 3mp cameras running currently. I'm using the 30 day demo. So far the mac mini is chugging along flawlessly. Before I purchase, can someone clarify a few things please? Any help is appreciated.

1. Can I not record using the 30 day demo? I really want to see what I'm buying before I actually "buy".

The cameras look great, the software runs well. I understand I will need much more drive space for storage. When I click "view captured footage" there is nothing in the pane nor the root folder. A purchase is required to actually record?

2. Will my system handle a minimum of 6 cameras, potentially 8? All of them being 3mp.

3. Adding an external thunderbolt drive as storage. Will that cause issues, latency in your experience?

4. I setup my firewall for remote access. Got the app running, all is well there. I have all iOS devices. My wife has a droid. Best app to access via droid for remote viewing?

Thanks again for any help you can provide.

  • Good to hear things are running well so far. To answer your questions:

    1. All features are available during the trial period, including recording. For some basic motion-detection recording, go to the Camera Settings window and enable the "Capture movie when motion is detected" option, then click OK out of this window and set the camera to Active mode. This is described in the Getting Started section of the user manual.

    2. Yes this is possible, though you may have to reduce the frame rates of the cameras. Please see our System Requirements Calculator for more details.

    3. Thunderbolt storage will be fine, there will be no problem with latency.

    4. Please see the FAQ Is there an Android app for SecuritySpy?.

Hope this helps - let us know if you have any further questions.
  • Thank you!
  • I have another question for you Ben. First off I just purchased the software. I am now wanting to change the storage location of my files to a different hard disk. My Mini has 2 internal SSD's. Currently I have the second drive formatted and empty. I simply want to take advantage of the second storage controller so the OS and video are on separate drives. I have done some searches on this, and I'm sure it's a simple task. I cannot find the answer however.

Is it simply closing SS and dragging the root folder to the second disk? Thanks for any help.
  • Hi - this setting is called "Capture destination" and you'll find it at the bottom of the Setup section of the Camera Settings window. For each camera you want to record to the other disk, simply click the Set button and select the disk.

    Hope this helps!
  • Thank you sir! It was right there... in my face. I'm hoping to see a performance boost now that I'm capturing to a separate drive on an internal bus.
