Multiple user profiles, one machine

I created a new profile on my Mac Pro for the new administrator we hired. I have SecuritySpy running on my profile, which isn't logged out, but the service seems to freeze when she is logged in. Also, the built-in iSight camera ceases to work completely.

Can I have SS continue to run when I am not the active profile? If so, how?

  • Clarification and update:

    Machine/SS specs:
    Mac Pro 3.5 GHz 6-core Xeon E5, 16GB, 10.10.3 / SS 3.4.7

iSight issue is understood (shuts down for security reasons), but is there a way to have them reenable it?

SS stops recording and broadcasting when I fastswitch users. And, to make matters worse, when I switch back to the main user, cameras start functioning again, but all of the camera frame rates seemed to have dropped drastically; some from ~30fps to <10fps.
  • Hi, as you discovered, the system blocks access to the iSight to background users. When this happens the video from this camera will dissapear in SecuritySpy, however SecuritySpy will try to re-establish the connection to the camera every 30 seconds or so, so that when you go back to the user profile that is running SecuritySpy the camera should quickly reconnect.

As for the other problem, are you saying that when running in the background user profile, there is no recording taking place, and by "stops broadcasting" do you mean that the web interface no longer responds? Are you sure that you are not logging out of the user profile that is running SecuritySpy (i.e. you have Fast User Switching enabled, and you are switching users without first logging out)?
  • iSight: Is there a way for the secondary user to *enable* the camera while they are the active user?

Broadcasting: The web interface stops working, and also connecting via mobile apps like LiveCams Pro.

I am utilizing Fast User Switching, so both users are logged in at the same time.
  • I'm don't quite understand your question about the iSight - could you expand? The iSight is only available to the front-running user. So SecuritySpy in the background cannot access it, but when you switch back to the SecuritySpy user it should automatically come back online after a few seconds.

I've just done a test here (same system version as you, and this works as expected. I also can't see any problems with the web server working for the background SecuritySpy.

However there is one reason why switching the user account can stop the background SecuritySpy from working, and that is the IP settings of the two user accounts. The Mac's network interface can only have one set of IP settings at one time, so when you switch to a different user account, the IP settings of that account will take effect. If the IP settings are different in the second user account, any software that uses the network (e.g. SecuritySpy may be prevented from working in the background account).

So I would recommend setting static (Manual) IP address details for both user accounts, as described in the Remote monitoring / Setting up your Mac section of the SecuritySpy Installation Manual, and make sure that they are identical in both user accounts. Hopefully this will resolve the problem.
