How can I reduce network activity?

I have one camera on my garage and I do not need a live view on my computer so I have closed the main video window. However, there is a constant data flow indicated by rapidly flashing lights on my router. I only need the data if there is motion detected. Is there a way to reduce the constant data flow activity—or is that just the way it all works?

    Hi - even when you close the video window, SecuritySpy still keeps an active connection to the camera. This is because video could be required at any time (e.g. the video window could be opened, a frame could be requested via the web server, recording could be triggered etc.), and keeping a connection open in this way ensures that there will be no delay. We are considering making this behaviour optional in the future, but for now this is the way it works.

    If your camera and Mac are connected by wired ethernet then you don't have to worry at all - there will be plenty of bandwidth to accommodate the stream without impacting network performance. WiFi has less bandwidth so this could potentially be a problem, but generally only with multiple cameras and high resolutions and frame rates.

    If you want to minimise the bandwidth, make sure the camera is streaming video to SecuritySpy in H.264 format, and reduce the frame rate to the lowest acceptable level.
