Is there a maximum length for the Web Server passwords?

I am changing my password to a 30+ character Number/Letter/Symbol and I can't log in to the web server until I reduce the length and complexity (although I have truly tested out symbols yet).

Hi - the maximum length of the password is currently 31 characters. Most standard characters are supported, but not all (for a full list of supported characters, check the Mac OS Roman table).

I just tried a 31 character password with no luck in the widget. I can log in via the web interface and here is where my confusion started.

Can you check the widget and see if it works with a 31 character password? I don't see a version number on the widget or the file in /Library/Widgets. I downloaded a new copy tonight and removed the old and I still can't bring up a camera with a 31 character password.

I searched through the manual before posting and I did not find a reference to the maximum length password. Unless I missed it, it may be a good idea to document this next time you are updating the manual.

Hi - sorry about this problem with the widget, this is the first time we have come across this. The problem is not with the length, it's likely to be with the character encoding, which is set wrong in the widget. So if you are using some of the more exotic characters, they would be sent wrong from the widget to SecuritySpy.

I've fixed this and uploaded a new version of the widget. Please download and install it, and then re-enter the username and password.

A quick test this morning did not work. I will try again this evening. I use 1Password to create my passwords if that helps you any. I will remove the symbols from the password and then try to login again.

Installing the widget left two installed on the Widget pane but only one in the /Library/Widgets folder. I deleted the widget out and checked the Widgets pane and it was gone. I reinstalled. 31 character password (numbers/letters) works fine.

My suggestion going forward would be to find out what symbols 1Password uses (I can do this for your) and ask that you support them in some future release.

Good to hear it's now working. Yes the widgets can be a little funny when replacing/updating them so glad you were able to straighten that out.

I'll investigate what symbols 1Password uses and see what adjustments we can make accordingly. In general we are moving from Mac OS Roman character encoding to UTF-8 across the board, which will resolve all such issues. However this is a major structural change and may take a while.
