Video Codec Test

A free utility that benchmarks the video
encoding/decoding capabilities of your Mac

This software has a number of options to benchmark the H.264/H.265 encoding/decoding capabilities of your Intel or Apple Silicon Mac.

Before running the tool, make sure to quit all other applications that do video processing, as well as any application that uses significant CPU.

When prompted, please agree to share the test results with us - this is anonymous and helps us gather data to improve our products and maintain our SecuritySpy System Requirements Calculator.

You can choose to run all tests (recommended), or you can choose individual tests - there is a choice of encoding or decoding, H.264 or H.265 video format, and 2K or 4K resolution. Then, choose where the processing will place: on the CPU, via the internal hardware, and/or via an external eGPU device.

Each test lasts 20 seconds and will stop automatically. The main benchmark is the Throughput number, which indicates how many video frames your Mac is capable of processing per second under the conditions of the test.

Processing is done via multiple background threads. The number of threads used is chosen automatically to optimise performance and give accurate real-world performance metrics.

This software is compatible with any Mac running macOS 10.13 or later, and runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

The current version is 1.3, released 23 January 2023.

This software is free for anyone to use. This software is provided AS IS and without warranty of any kind.
