Pixel vs. AI detection question

I've been experimenting with AI vs. Pixel detection. I only have motion capture enabled. I do NOT have human, vehicle, nor animal checked. I was wondering if there is a great advantage to AI detection since I'm not looking for the three categories. I prefer to record all motion.

Just an observation, but since turning on AI I have had two encoder overloads. They have not happened in months or longer with the older pixel detection. Could AI be having to "study" longer on each image and causing this? I am running SecuritySpy on an Mac Studio M1 Max with 32 Gig ram and a 4 TB NVME connected via Thunderbolt.

  • Hi Marty, the AI-powered motion detection is more accurate than the traditional pixel-based algorithm. So when using it you will benefit from fewer missed events as well as fewer false-positive detections. On your Apple Silicon Mac, the AI algorithm will be used by default. You can read more about it here: AI-Powered Motion Detection.

On Apple Silicon machines, the new algorithm is actually faster, as it is processed entirely within the Neural Engine that is built into these chips (as opposed to the traditional algorithm, which is processed by the CPU). So it should not cause any performance issues. If you see any further warnings about decoder overload, please email us and include a debug file (SecuritySpy menu > Debug > Create Debug File On Desktop) and we'll advise you further as to what could be causing this.

Ben, thanks so much for taking time to respond. I appreciate the informative response. I really like that the AI detection offloads from the CPU. It's nice to use a part of the chip that might not have used as much thus freeing up some CPU processing. If a decoder overload occurs again I will definitely make a debug file.

I'm very glad you have added the AI detection and I have enjoyed experimenting on different aspects such as having it avoid birds or not and it's amazing how well it works.

I have been experimenting between standard and the AI detection. Is there any advantage in choosing automatic detection over selecting the actual AI detection drop down? I would guess automatic simply chooses AI detection for you on Apple Silicon.

  • Hi Marty, great to hear your positive experiences. On your Mac, there is no advantage is specifically selecting the AI-powered motion detection option, since this is the default anyway for Apple Silicon Macs. Please do email if you see any more of these warning messages, and we'll investigate this further for you.

  • Thanks. That is great service for the software and user.
