Using multiple stream profiles per camera per recording type

Hi Ben,

I've recently been working with Axis Companion (now ACS Edge) on a few projects that had specific requirements I had to meet and noticed a great feature: the ability to use different streaming profiles from the same camera for various recording types.

For example, you can configure a high-quality profile for motion-detected recordings and a lower-quality profile for continuous recordings. Since the cameras handle compression onboard, this wouldn't burden a server with transcoding. This is ideal for capturing important events in maximum detail while maintaining a more storage-efficient 24/7 recording as a fallback in case motion detection misses something.

Is there a way to do this in SecuritySpy? If not, I'd like to request it as a potential feature for a future update.

Many thanks!

  • Hi Ben,

I vote for that request, too. As James wrote above I also used my Axis cams with two different streams to record on the internal SD cards. 720p for permanent recording and 1080p for motion detection. But I am not sure if my network would like a 720p stream and an additional 1080p stream from all my cams when motion is detected...πŸ€”

The Axis software (iOS app) offers another nice feature: Within the timebar that shows the permanent record, the motion recordings are colored and you could simply jump from one motion record to the next with a ">" button. I know that the MacOS app offers this, too. But I am only using your (great) software via the webinterface.

    Nocko!

  • Thanks for the suggestions. The only way this is currently possible is to add the camera twice, each pulling in a different stream with different encoding settings. However, this isn't a great solution, as it separates out different-quality recordings for the same cameras, and uses two "slots" of your SecuritySpy license for each camera that you duplicate in this way.

I like the idea of pulling in a secondary lower-resolution stream specifically for Continuous Capture. As mentioned above, this will use a bit more network bandwidth, but this should be minimal. It won't impact performance on the Mac, since only the high-res stream would need to be decoded (for things like motion detection). While I can't make any promises, we'll consider this functionality for a future update.

  • I see...doubling the cam slots will double the license fees. But there is no need to invest time and work in this functionality - just drop the license costs!

    Sorry - couldn't resist πŸ˜€

  • Almost as good: if you want to do this with your cameras, email us and we'll give you a discount on a license upgrade πŸ˜€

  • Hi Ben, many thanks for the response on this. I think it would make a great feature update for SSpy!
