Dual Lan Setup

I am reconsidering switching from Blue Iris to Security Spy - partly inspired by this post:

https://bensoftware.com/forum/discussion/4570/blue-iris-vs-securityspy-why-securityspy

On my current Blue Iris setup I have dual nics, with one lan for CCTV and the other Lan for the rest of the house and internet access. This is considered good practice for Blue Iris as it means the cameras do not have access to either the internet or your home network, and the windows PC will not route traffic between them.

How is this achieved using security spy?

There doesn't appear to be an option for dual nice on Mac minis, so do people:

1 Not care, and put the CCTV cameras on their main internal network

2 Use Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptors to add another Nic (if so, do they work ok, wake up after rebooting / sleep / etc?)

3 Use virtual Lans to achieve the same thing (if so how are you setting this up?)

4 something else?

Thanks

Rick

  • Hi Rick, great to hear you are considering switching to SecuritySpy. Many of our users have a setup exactly as you describe, in order to completely segregate the cameras away from the main network and the Internet (we have a blog post that describes this setup: Segregating IP Cameras on their own LAN). For this purpose, you can use a simple USB-to-Ethernet adaptor for one of the networks - UGREEN seems to be a decent brand for these.

  • Perfect! Thanks Ben - exactly what I was looking for.
