Web Cams ?

My wife would like to share a couple of our surveillance cameras as web cams. Any thoughts on how best to do this and do it securely?

  • The best way to do this is to create a web user account (under Settings > Web) that has viewing access to just the cameras you want to share. Then, simply provide the "viewcam.me" URL to your SecuritySpy system, along with the login details for this account, to anyone you want to give access to.

Does this do what you want?

  • Thanks Ben. Just getting back to this back burner project.

She's looking for something more open/public where she can simply post a link or include it on her blog page. I'm looking for security, both for our network and to insure that cameras not intended to be shared are not :-)

I think my preference would be to not have it streamed directly from our network/SS but for the stream to be hosted elsewhere. For example, within SS be able to check a box for 'public stream' and then be provided a link to a remote host that can be shared.

  • One solution is to sign up for some web space with FTP access - very common and inexpensive. You then get SecuritySpy to upload images periodically to the web space using the "webcam image" function at Settings > Cameras > Continuous Capture. Create a simple HTML page that includes the images, and provide the link to this page to anyone you want to give access to.

Or perhaps your wife's blog page supports FTP uploading of images, in which case she can simply use this existing web space that she already has.

This works well for uploads every 10s or longer - is this frequent enough? For true live video streaming, it would have to be a link to your SecuritySpy web server (either directly or via a proxy, although a proxy solution is probably overkill unless there will be lots of simultaneous viewers). This is possible to do with a simple link that includes authentication - do you think the webcam image solution is suitable for you, or would you like to explore this streaming option?

  • What about upload directly into YouTube live and add the YouTube url onto the blog
