Expanding on the SecuritySpy security

edited June 2024 in General

Hi all,

I have been using SecuritySpy since the PPC days and to this day it has met all my needs. The ability to pick my own cameras, have everything on-prem, not be forced into monthly payments or cloud use... it's perfect for my needs.

However, the cameras only tick one of my security check boxes and I am looking to add an alarm system as well. Which leads me to my question;

Is there a SecuritySpy-like software/system that allows me to cobble together my own alarm system with door sensors, smoke detectors, etc, while keeping everything on-prem and under my own control? I don't need professional monitoring or cloud storage with monthly fees attached.

I know this is an unusual question but I figured if anyone knows of such a solution, it would be SecuritySpy users :)

Thanks!

  • I have been using SS, Indigo and a DSC alarm for over a decade. When you add the DSC and SS plugins to Indigo, Indigo is excellent at integrating the three systems. My alarm sensors can trigger lights (via Indigo) and cameras (via SS) and even send me emails on any trigger I set up. Excellent low cost system.

  • Thanks Duss, do you have links to these products? My searches come up with a bunch of things.

  • I use

    Security Spy

    Indigo software: https://www.indigodomo.com/

    PowerLinc 2413U interface

Insteon Wall switches and outlets: https://www.insteon.com/

DSC Power832 Alarm with internet interface

Indigo Plugins https://www.indigodomo.com/pluginstore/ for Security Spy, DSC Alarm, and Email

  • indigo is like 200 dollars just fyi

  • You can also use Home Assistant with https://github.com/briis/securityspy to get motion/ai events.

I dropped Indigo hmm like 4+ years ago for Home Assistant.

  • If you're looking at adding a few accessories around the house like window sensors, door locks/sensors, PIR sensors and so on, one option would be to get some Apple Home compatible devices. Then it's as easy as adding and configuring them via the Home app on your iPhone. Easy setup, all on-premises, and no monthly fees. The added advantage is that these integrate nicely with SecuritySpy.

The range of accessories is quite limited, so I'm not sure if this solution would do everything you want. For a more comprehensive solution, you could look at a brand that sells security systems that have HomeKit compatibility, such as Abode. However, these kind of solutions tend to involved paid subscriptions.

  • Another method of doing this is to utilize the alarm inputs on the cameras themselves. This requires running ethernet and having a POE powered camera near each door that you want to alarm, but there are some major advantages. 1. No Batteries to deal with. 2. no wireless unreliability. 3. A more permanent and less hobbled together system. In addition to using the alarm inputs, there are also cameras that include PIR motion sensors right in the camera. I have external IR laser beams connected to a few of my cameras. These are way better than PIR, because they don't false alarm like PIR can. And pets do not set them off. I use a poe splitter to tap the power need to run the laser. Check to make sure your camera brand alarm input is supported by SS. I know that Dahua is and I believe Axis as well.

  • Thanks for your input @TSI this is a great idea!
