Sound Output Choice

edited June 2024 in SecuritySpy

Hello, I've used Security Spy for many years and it continues to run perfectly. I've just recently set up SS to be an alarm for when sleeping. It works great in testing but is there a way to direct sound to a different output: The Mac is one used for some other activity so I don't like to keep the speakers at full volume. I wanted to add a second set of speakers to the audio jack or USB on the Mac. These would be externally powered and could be quite loud and only used by SecuritySpy. I have not seen a way to have SecuritySpy choose which set of speakers to use. It seems to use the Mac default.

I know I can set the computer to full volume when playing a sound, but the speakers have a physical volume knob (which are kept about medium or lower) but the speakers I want to get for SecuritySpy will be controlled by the Mac, therefore I wanted to choose different default speakers for SecuritySpy.

Perhaps, a good option might be to use Loopback to grab the sound from SecuritySpy output and redirect it to another set of speakers. I've not tried this yet, but will experiment if SecuritySpy cannot redirect natively.

Thanks, Marty.

  • Hi Marty, great to hear that SecuritySpy is working well for you!

Currently, there is no option to direct SecuritySpy's audio alerts to a particular output - it will use the system default. We'll see if we can add this option in the future, but since this is the first time such an option has been requested I'm afraid this has to be low-priority for us to implement.

AppleScript alone doesn't seem to offer a solution, but there is a command-line utility called "sox" that apparently can do this. I've never used it before, so can't provide instructions, but here are some resources you could refer to if you want to pursue this:

Thanks much Ben. Thanks for the links. I certainly do understand not implementing it with no call for it. I appreciate you considering adding it, but I do own the software "Loopback" and you probably are familiar, but it's a virtual sound board where one can direct any sound to any output and mix and match and combine inputs, etc. Here are some screenshots

The first is the rerouting I created and named it SecuritySpy Audio. I had to close SecuritySpy and reopen but then the new audio source I created called SecuritySpy Audio shows up. As you can see in screenshot #1 I can send the SecuritySpy audio now to any or all devices and control the volume of each one or disable any output. On the left pane, if I so desired, I could bring other inputs as well and combine them. But, in this case, I only want to use SecuritySpy as the input. The new "SecuritySpy Audio" will now show up just like any hardware sound device. I just set "SecuritySpy Audio" as my new default device in SecuritySpy settings as you can see from screenshot #2.

    Marty
